Scarlett Johansson once had to jog Gwyneth Paltrow’s memory about an A-list actor she had been married to, which many people surprisingly forget about.
In fairness to Paltrow, it’s an easy detail to miss, especially given that Johansson’s marriage was followed by one of Hollywood’s most high-profile relationships.
Known for her iconic roles in Marvel’s Avengers series, Lucy, and Marriage Story, Johansson is one of the most recognizable faces in the entertainment world. Even so, her first marriage often slips people’s minds.
While appearing on Paltrow’s Goop podcast, named after her own lifestyle brand, Johansson opened up about her personal life and relationships, both past and present.
Currently, at 39, she is married to Saturday Night Live cast member Colin Jost. The two met in 2017, got married in 2020, and welcomed their first child together the following year.
Johansson and Jost initially connected when she was hosting SNL, and over time, their friendship grew into something more. She admitted that before meeting him, she never really knew what she wanted or needed in a partner.
During the conversation, Paltrow touched on Johansson’s previous marriages.
Paltrow asked: “You’ve been married two times?”
Johansson explained that she has actually been married three times, including her second marriage to former journalist Romain Dauriac, with whom she shares a child.
Then Paltrow chimed in, remembering: “Oh that’s right, because I forgot that you were married to Ryan Reynolds, goals!”
Laughing, Johansson reflected on her first marriage: “We weren’t married very long, but we were when I first met you, for Iron Man or whatever.”
Paltrow also shared her admiration for Reynolds, saying: “We love a good Ryan Reynolds in our house,” with Johansson agreeing, “He’s a good guy.”
Who would have thought? A rare amicable celebrity split.
As for Reynolds, he has been married to actress Blake Lively since 2012, and together they’ve built a life with their four children. Both juggle successful careers and various business ventures, including Reynolds’ co-ownership of Wrexham FC.
Reynolds and Johansson, however, were not together for very long. They wed in a private ceremony in September 2008, but by 2010, they had decided to part ways, finalizing their divorce in December of that year.
At the time, they shared a joint statement with People: “After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage.”
“We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.”
Looking back, it seems that both actors have moved forward positively and found happiness in their respective lives.
