The latest iPhone update has introduced a range of new features, but there’s one in particular that you might want to be extra cautious about.
iOS 18.1’s big highlights include Apple’s new AI tool, Apple Intelligence, alongside a variety of other updates and changes to explore.
Not every iPhone model will be able to enjoy these new features since some of the older devices don’t support the AI functions. However, for those with compatible devices, you can now send ‘smart replies’ and even record conversations you have over the phone.
Apple Intelligence can also provide a transcript of your conversation afterward, though it’s always worth double-checking to make sure it caught every word correctly, as transcription AI can sometimes make mistakes.
But there’s another unique feature available as long as you’re on FaceTime with someone else who also has an iPhone running iOS 18 or later.
What Is Apple’s Remote Control Feature?
You can now request control of the iPhone belonging to the person you’re FaceTiming with. If they agree, you’ll be able to navigate through their apps, look into their settings, and even send messages from their device.
Obviously, this feature is best saved for people you trust completely. Fortunately, you can cancel their access whenever you want to, keeping the feature in check.
Just be mindful about leaving your phone unattended while someone else has control of it, and everything should be fine.
How To Use Apple’s Remote Control Feature
According to Apple, if you’re in a one-on-one FaceTime call with someone saved in your contacts, and you both have the necessary technology and software, you can request control of each other’s devices.
If they grant permission, you’ll have access to their screen and will be able to navigate their apps and settings.
While the remote control feature is in use, Face ID and Touch ID are disabled, and you can still control your own screen with any of your touches taking priority over the other person’s actions.
You can also decline any remote control request, and there’s a large ‘off’ button at the bottom of your screen that will immediately end their access to your device if needed.
Many people have called this new feature ‘crazy,’ surprised at the idea of having the ability to control another iPhone remotely.
However, not everything on your phone is open to the other person. Apple has set restrictions that prevent them from doing certain actions, like accessing your Apple account, making payments, or attempting to erase your device.
